Dr Jonathon Parkinson, Neurosurgeon at the RNS Hospital and at the Gosford Private Hospital, spoke about back surgery. He highlighted the need to understand which patients would benefit most from surgery, and which back pain sufferers would better be advised to explore alternate solutions. The proper investigations and the different types of surgery were also discussed. Limitations of the surgical approach were discussed and other therapeutic modalities discussed.
Dr Anna Schutz, Neurologist at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals then spoke about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, discussing the clinical presentation of carpal tunnel syndrome. The importance of appropriate neurophysiological testing in the diagnosis of CTS was demonstrated, as was the utility of prompt surgical intervention.
